Heliornithidae

( Rì-tī kē ヒレアシ Hire-ashi ka Họ Chân bơi)

This family consists of three species, two types of finfoot and the sungrebe of tropical America. One kind of finfoot is found in Asia.

 

1. General names

Chinese: The finfoots are known as 鳍趾 qí-zhǐ-tī ('fin-footed grebes') in Chinese, an artificial word created using the second character from the word 'grebe', 䴙䴘 pìtī. They are not found in China.

Japanese: In Japanese, the finfoots are known as ヒレアシ hire-ashi, meaning 'fin-foot', written 鰭足 in Chinese characters. They are not found in Japan.

Vietnamese: The finfoots are found in Vietnam and are known in Vietnamese as Chân bơi 'paddle foot'.
