1. General names
Chinese: The Burhinidae (stone plovers, stone curlews, or thick-knees) are found in an isolated part of China and are not a popularly known bird. The name 石鸻 shí-héng is a translation of the English term 'stone plover'. |
Japanese: The Burhinidae are not found in Japan. As in Chinese, the official name, イシチドリ ishi-chidori, written 石千鳥 or 石鵆, is a direct translation of the English 'stone plover'. |
Vietnamese: The Burhinidae are found in Vietnam but are not common. The Vietnamese word for the Burhinus oedicnemus is Burin, directly taken from the scientific name. The Vietnamese name for Esacus recurvirostris suggests that it is a kind of snipe (Dẽ). |
